What Causes Anxiety Disorders?
Everyone gets anxious at times and anyone can go on to develop an ongoing anxiety disorder if left untreated. Certain events can make us more anxious than others, and the triggers can be different for everyone.
We may also be more at risk if someone else in our family has suffered from anxiety, as it can become a learnt behaviour of hyper vigilance and worry, or if we experience several stressful events in our lives.
Anxiety can often manifest in our teenage years.
We are tribal, and millions of years ago, if we were kicked out of our tribe we would not have survived. We couldn't hunt for food, keep the campfire burning and sleep if we were alone. The survival instinct to belong is ingrained in our very being, and therefore fallouts with friends at school can be devastating for us.
Factors That Contribute to an Anxiety Disorder Can Include:
- past or childhood experiences and trauma
- your current life situation
- social isolation or bullying
- stress related to school or work
- physical and mental health challenges
- social and societal pressures
- caffeine and alcohol
- drugs
Gender can also play a part, with women twice as likely to experience anxiety as men.
Research shows that having a close relative who struggles with anxiety may increase the chances of a child experiencing anxiety too. It is now widely believed that this is not the result of shared genetic factors that make us more vulnerable, it is instead because of learnt behaviours and thinking we copy and take on from our parents and other family members as we grow up.
“I am an old man and I have known a great many troubles, but most of them have never happened”
Mark Twain

Difficult experiences in childhood, adolescence or adulthood are a common trigger for anxiety problems. Going through stress and trauma is likely to have a particularly big impact if it happens when we're very young and unable to process what is happening to us.
