Understanding Your Nervous System States
Most of my clients come to us understanding what anxiety feels like, while not necessarily understanding what it actually is. At its core, anxiety is your nervous system operating in a specific state. This is what we call the sympathetic state, or fight-or-flight mode.
Your nervous system has two primary states:
The Sympathetic State (Fight or Flight): This is your survival mode. Your heart rate increases, muscles tense and breathing quickens. Your body is preparing for danger. When you're in this state for extended periods, your neck and shoulder muscles remain contracted, always ready to protect you.
The Parasympathetic State (Rest and Digest): This is your recovery mode. Your heart rate slows, your muscles relax, and your breathing deepens. This is when your body feels safe enough to release tension and repair itself.
The challenge isn't that we experience the sympathetic state. That is entirely normal, and it is an evolutionary response that has ensured our survival. The problem is when our nervous system gets stuck there, unable to shift back into rest and recovery.

How to Naturally Relieve Shoulder Tension Caused by Anxiety
Here are some gentle, natural ways you can begin to release that tightness and soothe your nervous system.
1. Bring Awareness to the Tension
So often, we carry tension without even realising it. Throughout your day, check in with your body, especially your shoulders. You may wish to set an alarm on your phone.
Ask yourself:
- Are your shoulders relaxed or raised?
- Are you holding your breath?
- Can you soften your shoulders, even just a little?

This is a beautiful technique where you tense and release each muscle group one by one. It’s particularly helpful when done before sleep or after a stressful day.
4. Move Your Shoulders Mindfully
Gentle exercises like shoulder rolls, cat-cow stretches, or slow arm circles can increase blood flow and mobility.
Yoga, Pilates, or even just standing in a doorway and stretching your arms back can help create space in the upper body.
